What is a Part 573 Safety Recall Report?
The defect or noncompliance report a manufacturer must file with NHTSA within 5 working days of deciding a safety defect or noncompliance exists.
49 CFR Part 573 lists what the report contains: the vehicles or equipment involved (with production dates and VIN ranges), the number of units, a description of the defect and its safety risk, the chronology that led to the decision, and the planned remedy and schedule.
NHTSA assigns the campaign number when it receives the report and publishes the report, which is why a recall usually appears in NHTSA data before owners get a letter.
