What is a manufacturer recall number?
The carmaker's own code for a recall campaign (for example a short letter-number code on the owner letter), different from NHTSA's campaign number.
Dealers schedule and claim recall repairs under the manufacturer's number. NHTSA records list both, so a VIN check that returns the NHTSA campaign number can be matched to the letter in the owner's mailbox.
