How to get an alert when a US tariff on your products changes

Updated 2026-11-03 · Data and API builders · by CyberMax

Short answer

US duty on a product can change in four places: a new revision of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule from the USITC (often several a month), the Section 301 China lists and their extra rates in Chapter 99, product exclusions that expire on a set date, and Federal Register notices from USTR, Commerce, CBP, the USITC and presidential proclamations. To catch a change, list your 8- or 10-digit HTS codes with the country of origin, and compare each code against every new revision and notice. An alert is only useful if it shows the old rate, the new rate, the date it takes effect and the official source.

  1. List every product you import with its 8- or 10-digit HTS code and country of origin.
  2. Note the current general rate, any Section 301 list and exclusion, and the free-trade rate if you claim one.
  3. Check each new USITC HTS revision against your codes (USITC posts the revision list at hts.usitc.gov).
  4. Read new Federal Register documents that name your chapters or headings (search federalregister.gov for "Harmonized Tariff Schedule").
  5. Put exclusion end dates and announced effective dates in your calendar, and recheck landed cost when one arrives.

Questions

How often does the HTS change?

The USITC published 22 revisions of the 2026 schedule by the end of October 2026 (hts.usitc.gov release list). Most change a handful of lines; some add whole Chapter 99 actions.

Do I need to watch the Federal Register too?

Yes. New tariff actions, exclusion extensions and investigations are announced there before, or instead of, appearing as new HTS lines.
