Using a 2D pixel art tileset: 47-tile autotiling in Godot 4
Short answer
Most pro tilesets use the 47-tile blob layout: one tile for every combination of neighbouring edges and corners. In Godot 4, create a TileSet, add a Terrain Set in "Match Corners and Sides" mode, paint each tile's peering bits once, and from then on you paint terrain and Godot picks the right edge tiles for you.
- TileMapLayer > TileSet > New TileSet; set the tile size (for example 16×16).
- Add the tileset image as an atlas source.
- TileSet > Terrains: add a terrain set (Match Corners and Sides) and a terrain per ground type.
- Select each tile and paint its peering bits; then use the Terrains tab in the TileMap editor to paint.
Good to know
16×16 tiles drawn at ×3 or ×4 suit 1080p screens; keep the camera zoom at whole numbers to avoid shimmering.
A tileset that ships ready-made terrain sets saves the slowest part of this setup.
