European Accessibility Act: what to check on your website

Updated 2026-11-01 · Small business, landlords and freelancers · by CyberMax

Short answer

The European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) has applied since 28 June 2025 to many products and services sold to consumers in the EU, including e-commerce, banking, e-books and transport services. Each EU country enforces it through its own authority. For websites the technical benchmark is the harmonised standard EN 301 549, whose web requirements follow WCAG at level AA. In practice: fix the WCAG AA problems on the pages customers use, publish an accessibility statement with a feedback contact, and keep checking after changes. Very small businesses providing services may be exempt; check your country's rules.

  1. Check whether your service is covered and whether the micro-enterprise exemption applies in your country.
  2. Run WCAG 2.2 AA checks on the customer journey: browse, product, cart, checkout, account, contact.
  3. Fix critical problems first (text alternatives, labels, names, zoom, keyboard).
  4. Publish an accessibility statement: conformance status, known problems, a feedback contact, the enforcement body.
  5. Re-check after every release and keep a record of fixes.
