How to write an accessibility statement (with a free template)
Short answer
An accessibility statement tells visitors how accessible your site is and how to reach you when something does not work. Include: the standard you aim for (WCAG 2.2 level AA), your conformance status (fully, partially or not yet), the known problems and when you plan to fix them, how you test, a contact for accessibility feedback with a reply time, the enforcement or complaints body where one applies, and the date. Link it from your footer.
- Run a WCAG check to know your status and known problems.
- Fill in the template: standard, status, known problems, testing, contact, enforcement body, date.
- Publish it on its own page and link it from every footer.
- Update it when you fix problems or the site changes.

Is an accessibility statement required?
The European Accessibility Act asks covered services to provide information on how they meet accessibility requirements, and EU public-sector sites must publish one. Elsewhere it is good practice.
