What are FMVSS?
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards: the minimum safety performance rules in 49 CFR Part 571 that vehicles and equipment sold in the US must meet.
Standards are numbered, for example FMVSS 108 (lamps and reflective devices), FMVSS 111 (rear visibility) and FMVSS 208 (occupant crash protection). A vehicle that fails one triggers a noncompliance recall, even if no crash has happened; a safety-related defect that no standard covers triggers a defect recall.
