What is autotiling (terrain sets, 47-tile blob)?

Game assets glossary · 1 primary source

Tiles drawn for every way a terrain can meet its neighbours, so the editor can pick the right edge or corner automatically while you paint.

A full "blob" set that looks at all 8 neighbours needs 47 distinct tiles; simpler sets that look only at the 4 sides or the 4 corners need 16. Godot 4 implements this with terrain sets: each tile's sides and corners are tagged with a terrain, and the editor matches them when you paint.

A complete blob set lets you paint organic shapes, single-tile islands and one-tile-wide paths without hand-fixing corners.
