Fellwing: free flight simulator online

Fellwing is a free flight simulator you play in your browser, over the real shape of the Earth. The ground is built from real elevation data for the whole planet, so the Matterhorn, Yosemite Valley, the Norwegian fjords, the Grand Canyon and Everest are where they are and the shape they are. Start in the air over one of 18 famous landscapes, take off from one of 19 real runways (Innsbruck, Queenstown, Paro, Madeira, Sion and more), or type any latitude and longitude and fly there. The flight model is a real six-degrees-of-freedom simulation: lift and stall, drag, engine power that falls with altitude, flaps, landing gear with brakes and nose-wheel steering, wind and turbulence. Glass-cockpit instruments show airspeed, altitude, vertical speed, heading, attitude and g. Every day there is one Daily Route for everyone: seven gates through a famous landscape, flown against the clock, with a challenge link that sends your time to a friend. Take a photo or record a 10-second clip, and share a link that drops your friend at the same spot. No download, no sign-up: it runs on phones, Chromebooks and PCs, with touch, keyboard or a gamepad.

How to play Fellwing

  1. Press Fly the daily route, or choose Free flight and pick a landscape, a real runway or any place on Earth.
  2. Fly with the arrow keys or WASD (or the right thumb on a phone); set power with Shift and Ctrl (or the left slider).
  3. On a runway: full power, let the speed build, then pull back gently at rotation speed and climb away.
  4. On the Daily Route, fly through the seven orange gates in order; the arrow on screen points to the next one.
  5. Beat your time, then send the challenge link: your friend flies the same gates from the same start.

Controls

Phone and tablet: Your right thumb is the control stick: drag it to bank and to pitch the nose up or down. The slider on the left sets the throttle, and buttons work the flaps, gear and brakes. Flight assist keeps turns coordinated and holds your climb or descent when you let go. Turn the phone sideways for the widest view.

Desktop, laptop and Chromebook: Arrow keys or WASD fly the aircraft (up pushes the nose down, like a real control column; invert it in the pause menu). Q and E work the rudder, Shift and Ctrl or the number keys set the throttle, F extends the flaps (Shift+F retracts), G moves the gear, Space holds the brakes, C changes the camera (chase, cockpit, orbit, flyby), K takes a photo and Esc pauses. Drag with the mouse to look around. A gamepad works too.

Fellwing tips and strategy

  • Keep at least 1,000 ft between you and the ridges until you know the valley.
  • At high altitude the air is thin: the engine makes less power and the aircraft needs more speed to fly. Over Everest, keep the nose low and the speed up.
  • For the Daily Route, the shortest line is not always the fastest: a gentle descent builds speed for the next gate.
  • If the stall warning sounds, lower the nose and add power before you pull again.
  • Flaps let you fly slower for take-off and landing; retract them in the cruise or they cost speed.
  • The cockpit view shows the flight path marker: put it on the gate and you will fly through it.

Game modes

  • Daily Route: seven gates through a famous landscape, the same for everyone today, with a time and a challenge link.
  • Free flight: 18 scenic air starts, 19 real runways, or any latitude and longitude on Earth.
  • Challenge a friend: a link with your route and time; they fly the same gates from the same start.
  • Fun Pass extras: three more aircraft (Rook 9 STOL bush plane, Strix A2 aerobatic, Vesper SJ jet), morning, golden hour, dusk and night skies, haze, overcast and strong-wind weather, saved spots and every past Daily Route.

The Daily Route, free flight anywhere on Earth, the Kestrel T-3 trainer, photos, clips and challenge links are free, with no ads and no sign-up. The optional CyberMax Fun Pass ($2.99/month, $19/year or $29.99 for life) adds three more aircraft, every time of day and weather, saved spots and the archive of past Daily Routes, and opens everything in every CyberMax game. It never changes the flight model or the routes.

Fellwing FAQ

Is Fellwing free to play?

Yes. The Daily Route, free flight anywhere on Earth, the Kestrel T-3 trainer, photos, clips and challenge links are free, with no ads and no sign-up. The optional CyberMax Fun Pass ($2.99/month, $19/year or $29.99 once) adds the Rook 9 STOL, the Strix A2 aerobatic plane and the Vesper SJ jet, morning, golden hour, dusk and night skies, haze, overcast and strong wind, saved spots and every past Daily Route.

Is the terrain real?

Yes. The shape of the ground comes from public elevation data for the whole Earth (SRTM and other national and global elevation models, served as AWS Terrain Tiles). The ground colours are drawn by the game from that elevation and from NASA's Blue Marble, so you see real mountains, valleys and coastlines, but not satellite photos of buildings or roads.

Can I fly over my house?

You can fly to any latitude and longitude, or use Near me, and see the real hills, valleys and coast around it. Fellwing does not use satellite photos, so individual houses and streets are not shown.

Which airports are in Fellwing?

19 real runways, placed from public airport data: Sion, Innsbruck and Samedan in the Alps, Queenstown, Talkeetna, Grand Canyon, Mammoth Lakes, Telluride, Aspen, Kahului (Maui), Alesund, Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont, Cape Town, Madeira, Paro, Sint Maarten, Gibraltar, Reykjavik and San Francisco.

How realistic is the flight model?

It is a six-degrees-of-freedom simulation with real aerodynamic coefficients for each aircraft class: lift with a stall break, drag, engine power that falls with altitude, flaps, gear and brakes, wind and turbulence. It is a game, not a certified trainer, and it is not for real navigation.

Does it run on my phone?

Yes. Fellwing runs in the browser on phones, tablets, Chromebooks and PCs. It lowers detail on smaller devices and has touch controls: the right thumb flies, the left slider sets the throttle, and flight assist keeps turns smooth.

Is Fellwing multiplayer?

You fly solo and compete through the Daily Route (the same seven gates for everyone each day) and challenge links that carry your time. You can also share a link that starts a friend at exactly the spot you photographed.

Is Fellwing unblocked?

Fellwing is an HTML5 game on cybermaxtools.com with no download or plug-in. It loads elevation tiles from a public Amazon Web Services address, so whether a school or work network allows it depends on that network's filters.
