What to put on an invoice (free template)
Short answer
An invoice needs: your business name and contact details, the client's name and address, a unique invoice number, the invoice date and a due date, a line for each item or service (description, quantity, rate, amount), subtotal, tax if you charge it, the total, and how to pay. Add your terms (for example late fees) if you use them.
- Number invoices in sequence (2026-001, 2026-002); never reuse a number.
- Write a real due date, not just "Net 30".
- Put every way to pay on the invoice: bank details, payment link, contact for questions.
- Send a friendly reminder the day after the due date with the invoice attached again.
