Retail store schedule template: openers, closers and weekend peaks
A store schedule has fixed bookends (someone opens, someone closes, never alone if you can help it) and a weekend peak in the middle. Here is a small store's week, with its labour cost and the problems the checker finds.
What matters for retail stores
Two at open and close
Coverage by hour shows every hour where only one person is in the store. Those are the hours to fix first for safety and for breaks.
Watch the clopen
A closer who opens the next morning gets little rest. Some cities and states have fair workweek laws that require rest between shifts or extra pay, and require schedules to be posted in advance; check yours.
Part-timers have caps
Set each person's weekly maximum (for example 29 hours) and the schedule warns when you go over.
Worked example
Store open 10:00–21:00 (Sunday to 18:00), five staff, minimum rest 10 hours, labour cost at each rate with overtime after 40 hours at 1.5×. Week of 5 - 11 Oct 2026.
