Time card calculator for construction crews: 10-hour days, daily overtime, rounding

Construction hours swing with the weather and the schedule: four 10-hour days one week, a Saturday pour the next. Whether a 10-hour day is overtime depends on the state, and crews often round to the quarter hour. Here is what to set and a real week.

What matters for construction crews

Federal: weekly only. California: daily too

Federally, four 10-hour days are 40 hours and no overtime. In California, hours over 8 in a workday are overtime at 1.5× and hours over 12 are double time, so the same week has 8 overtime hours.

Rounding must even out

Rounding clock times to the nearest quarter hour is allowed federally only if, over time, it does not shortchange workers. Crews that clock in early at the yard should either pay that time or have a clear start-time rule.

Federal jobs pay prevailing wages

On federally funded construction covered by the Davis-Bacon Act, workers must be paid at least the locally prevailing wage set by the Department of Labor, and contractors file weekly certified payrolls. Hoursprig works out hours; it does not produce certified payroll forms.

Worked example

A carpenter on California rules (daily overtime after 8 h, double time after 12 h, weekly after 40 h), $32.00/hour, clock times rounded to the nearest 15 minutes.

Rules applied: Weekly overtime after 40 h at 1.5x, daily overtime after 8 h, double time (2x) after 12 h a day. Clock times rounded to the nearest 15 min. Computed by Hoursprig's own calculation code. Daily overtime and double time are Pro rules.

How to set it up in Hoursprig

  1. Enter the worker's rate and pick the week.
  2. For California crews, turn on daily overtime after 8 hours and double time after 12 (Pro rules); elsewhere keep weekly overtime only unless your state requires more.
  3. Choose rounding (nearest 15 minutes, 6 or 5, or exact minutes) to match your written policy.
  4. Add the job site in each day's note, then download the PDF for the foreman and worker to sign.

FAQ

Is a 10-hour day overtime?

Not under federal law if the week stays at 40 hours or less. In California, the 2 hours over 8 are overtime.

Can I round to the nearest 15 minutes?

Federal rules allow nearest-quarter-hour rounding if it averages out fairly over time. Hoursprig rounds each clock time the same way in both directions.

How do I show which job the hours were on?

Use the note on each day; it prints on the timesheet and goes into the CSV export (Pro).
